The English major offers two concentrations, Writing Arts or Literary Arts, as well as two minors, English or Professional Writing. The goal of the English program is to help students develop the reading, writing, speaking, research, and critical thinking skills necessary for their professional, civic, and personal success. English also offers courses in the Pre Law minor and the Environmental Studies major. English also offers courses that meet the core curriculum writing intensive and diversity course requirements. Recent upper division literature offerings have included the Literature of the American Worker; Monsters and Mirrors; Revolutionary Literature; Poetry from the British Isles to the Caribbean Islands, and World Literature and the Environment. Recent upper division writing courses have included Writing Speculative Fiction, Poetry: Form and Idea; Memoir; Writing Magical Realism.

Huston-Tillotson University will accept, for the purposes of meeting the English proficiency requirement, evidence of English study within a 12 year education system where English is designated as the primary and official language and the principal language of instruction. For applicants who do not yet meet the English language requirement, there are two pathways to achieve the necessary level:
Pre sessional English Programme; Students may successfully complete a preparatory English programme offered by the university before beginning their academic course. Recognized English Proficiency Tests; Students may submit one of the following minimum scores prior to the start of their program: IELTS: 6.5 overall band score (or equivalent), TOEFL or PTE: Score of 60, Duolingo English Test: Score of 120.
