The Biology degree in Pre-Nursing
prepares students to transfer to a four-year program at a baccalaureate
institution. Upon completion of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, graduates
choose from first level professional nursing staff positions in specializations
which include community health, geriatrics, maternity, mental health,
pediatrics, psychiatry, and surgery. Note that for College of San Mateo's
Nursing Program CHEM 410 is the specific chemistry prerequisite. Be sure to
check the specific prerequisites for other Nursing Programs. Explain the
scientific method and its applications, and use the scientific method in a
laboratory setting. Explain the principles of evolution as a fundamental
process of all biology. Describe how structure and function contribute to
homeostasis at all levels of human biology. Demonstrate proficiency in basic
lab skills and analysis. Demonstrate knowledge of common and current clinical
issues. With the increasing complexities of our modern world, the biological
sciences will most certainly be at the forefront of scientific research,
solving today’s problems while developing a thorough understanding of our past.
Biologists look at our world through molecular biology, genetics, and
microbiology as well as organismal biology and ecology.
