Grade 1 (Lower Primary)

For Grade one (1) in Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board primary school curriculum, the emphasis is on building strong foundations in literacy, numeracy, and social skills. Children begin learning to read and write in French or English, depending on the school system, while also being introduced to a second language (English or French). Mathematics focuses on number sense, simple operations (addition and subtraction), shapes, and measurement. Science and technology are taught through observation of the natural world, simple experiments, and hands on exploration. Social sciences introduce the idea of community, local environment, and basic citizenship. Arts education encourages creativity through drawing, music, and movement, while physical education develops coordination, fitness, and teamwork. Our schools; John F. By the end of Grade 1, students are expected to read short texts, write simple sentences, count and solve basic problems, express themselves creatively, and participate responsibly in group activities.
